The physical movements associated with the gaseous exchange are called breathing.<\/p>\n

Durin<\/span>g <\/span>inspiration <\/span>the <\/span>rib <\/span>muscles <\/span>contract <\/span>and ribs <\/span>are <\/span>raised<\/span>. <\/span>At <\/span>the <\/span>same <\/span>time <\/span>the <\/span>dome <\/span>shaped <\/span>diaphragm <\/span>contracts <\/span>and <\/span>is <\/span>lowered<\/span>. <\/span><\/p>\n

b<\/b>) <\/b>Effect <\/b>of <\/b>contrac<\/b>tion\u00a0<\/b><\/p>\n

These <\/span>movements <\/span>increase <\/span>the <\/span>area <\/span>of <\/span>the <\/span>thoracic <\/span>cavity <\/span>which <\/span>reduces <\/span>the <\/span>pressure <\/span>on <\/span>lungs<\/span>. <\/span>As <\/span>a <\/span>result<\/span>, <\/span>the <\/span>lungs <\/span>expand <\/span>and <\/span>the <\/span>air <\/span>pressure <\/span>within <\/span>them <\/span>also <\/span>decreases<\/span>. <\/span>The <\/span>air <\/span>from <\/span>outside <\/span>rushes <\/span>into <\/span>the <\/span>lungs <\/span>to <\/span>equalize <\/span>the <\/span>pressure <\/span>on <\/span>both <\/span>sides<\/span>.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

After <\/span>the <\/span>gaseous <\/span>exchange <\/span>in <\/span>the <\/span>lungs<\/span>, <\/span>the <\/span>impure <\/span>air <\/span>is <\/span>expelled <\/span>out <\/span>in <\/span>exhalation<\/span>. <\/span>The <\/span>rib <\/span>muscles <\/span>relax <\/span>bringing <\/span>the <\/span>ribs <\/span>back <\/span>to <\/span>the <\/span>original <\/span>position<\/span>. <\/span>The <\/span>diaphragm <\/span>muscles <\/span>also relax <\/span>and <\/span>it\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n
